Taiwan round up

We were lucky to be in Taiwan during the Chinese New Year as the country is at its best. The festive atmosphere, the lanterns, the festivals made our time here really memorable. Although a small country, there is so much to see, do and experience that we are sure that we will be back (probably in summer time instead) to be able to enjoy all the things we missed due to lack of time or not ideal weather.

Day 250 and 251: Taipei and a nice goodbye to Taiwan

We had only one more day in Taipei so we decided to visit the famous Taipei 101 observatory. We made our way to the tower, the highest tower in the word in 2004. Construction on the 101-story tower started in 1999 and finished in 2004. The tower has served as an icon of modern Taiwan ever since its opening. The building was architecturally created as a symbol of the evolution of technology and Asian tradition. Its post-modernist approach to style incorporates traditional design elements and gives them modern treatments. The tower is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes.  Read More

Day 246 to 248: Beautiful Alishan

At 11 am we took a train to Chiay where we double checked the option of taking the Alishan forest railway to the National Park but it was partially closed due to destruction caused by the big typhoon in 2009. So we decided to take the alternative bus route for 360 TWD (the latest bus leaves around 2 pm and taxis are the alternative but for 2,000 TWD). We arrived just in time, as Mariana was already quite sick from the curvy last bit in the bus up into the mountains. We paid the entrance fee to the park (150 TWD per person) and went to the Tourist Information Centre to get a map and further information on the things to do here. Due to the altitude, it was chilly and very misty. Read More

Day 242: Along Dongshan Coffee Road

Early morning we left our hostel in Kaohsing to take a train to Tainan. The journey was just 30 minutes, and we had breakfast on the train. When we arrived we looked around the station to find a scooter rental place. We checked and compare prices of three different places and we went for the shop with a lovely old man that made us a good deal. We left our luggage at a locker in the train station and took advantage of the good weather to explore the Dongshan Coffee Road.  Read More

Day 238: From east to west

The east coast of Taiwan is known for its natural beauty, unspoiled beaches and not very developed cities. We wanted to spend some more time on this coast and do some outdoor activities, but at this time of the year it was too cold and the weather wasn’t great. We decided to move to the west coast and seek some sun. But Mario found an interesting place to stop before going west. Read More
